What is Chevening?

The Chevening Scholarship Programme is a prestigious awards scheme that funds international postgraduate students who want to study in the UK. Funded by the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office with contributions from the Higher Education Institutes in the UK, the private sector, and some other Whitehall Departments, the scheme operates in over 150 countries and annually provides funding for over 2,300 students. In Bulgaria the scheme is administered by the British Council and the Open Society Institute.

The Chevening scholarship is a prestigious award that gives the chance to experience a world-renowned educational system. In addition, this provides young people (25 - 35 years) with the opportunity to experience UK life and meet other Chevening scholars. The years have already proved that Chevening scholars discover many opportunities to develop their career and become future leaders in their fields.

The students are selected by the British Embassy in co-operation with the British Council and the Open Society Institute for study in subject fields that are considered to be a priority for Bulgaria. Awards are given for postgraduate study for up to a year in the UK only.

The successful applicants should be University graduates with proven academic success and a progressive professional career in a chosen field. At least two years' working experience after graduation, with an excellent track record illustrating achievements, and evidence that the applicant has the potential to become a leader in the chosen field are also a requirement. Good English language skills (most UK Higher Education institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission onto postgraduate courses) is also a must.
